To move in Ingress, you need to move in the real world. For example, you can walk, cycle, or use an assistive mobility device to collect XM and interact with Portals within 40m range.
Protip: Enable Adventure Sync to track your distance traveled even when the Ingress app or Scanner is closed. On the Map screen, tap the Main menu button > Settings > then select the checkboxes to enable Adventure Sync Distance Tracker and Nearby Alerts.
Please note that you should never drive while playing, and there are safeguards in place to pause functionality if you are moving too quickly.
